Ohio was within 28-21 in the fourth quarter at Nebraska before losing 49-21, so the final-margin refit misses competitive stretches. Jacksonville State's rebound deserves credit, especially Creel's passing, but an EKU rout does not establish comparable road efficiency after only 170 yards at North Dakota State. The market has already moved toward Ohio from the dossier's -1.5/-2 openers; this is modest remaining value below three, not undiscovered news. Perry's uncertain availability and Ohio's coaching transition reduce conviction. Hauser provides defensive continuity, but the dossier incorrectly treats him as an established head coach. DraftKings' extreme splits lack sample counts and add no confidence. I could not verify a complete availability report, final depth charts, or additional suspension/portal-related absences; last week's quarterback participation is not a formal Saturday clearance.

Creel's 85 passing yards at North Dakota State versus 327 against EKU underline opponent sensitivity. Perry's uncertain status adds a minor under consideration, without assuming he is out. The over case is credible: Ohio allowed 523 yards, Creel and Williams showed explosive chemistry, and kickoff weather does not establish a meaningful scoring penalty. Final margins obscure Ohio's late collapse and Jacksonville State's opponent-dependent offensive results. I favor Ohio narrowly, not by nearly a touchdown.

Our number (Ohio -6.6) sits four points past a market that has parked at -2.5 all week, and here I trust the market: the rating codes John Hauser as a returning head coach when 2026 is his first year at Ohio, and it credits 62.5% returning production to a team that replaced a 26-game starting quarterback. Both errors flatter Ohio. I still take Ohio, on the news rather than on our number. Jacksonville State lost linebacker Mac Sanders, its leading tackler as a freshman, for the season (Kelly, 9/8), and Kelly named run defense his priority after Eastern Kentucky rushed for 195 yards in a 42-point loss. Ohio wants to establish the run and has a quarterback who carried 10 times for 70 yards at Nebraska behind a line that allowed zero sacks. Add a home opener and a 90% chance of rain and the ground game decides this. The counterweight is real: Ohio surrendered 523 yards in week one and 68% of tickets are already on them, so this is a lean, not a bet.

Total. The totals model's only weather input is a stale 4.2 mph wind reading taken from a 'partly cloudy, 46% precipitation' forecast. The National Weather Service, updated 12:33pm ET 9/10, now has showers likely then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am Saturday, 90% chance of precipitation, a half to three quarters of an inch, and showers and thunderstorms again before 11pm - a 6pm kickoff sits inside both windows. Wind is light at 6 mph, so this is a wet-ball, wet-field, possible-delay game rather than a wind game, and 82 degrees blunts some of it. The market is already leaning this way: BetMGM and Pinnacle came off 51.5 to 50.5 this week while 73% of tickets sit on the over. And Jax State scored 7 points on 85 passing yards the one time it faced a defense with a pulse.

Where our model looks wrong

Two concrete input errors, both of which inflate Ohio. First, the preseason prior carries first_year_head_coach: false for Ohio, but John Hauser is in his first season in Athens in 2026 - the coaching-change penalty never fired. Second, returning_production_pct 0.625 does not reflect that Ohio replaced a 26-game starting quarterback (Parker Navarro) with a first-time starter. Separately, the in-season refit is doing something perverse: it dropped Ohio from -4.885 to -8.091 for losing 49-21 on the road to a Big Ten team, and dropped Jax State from -6.667 to -11.537 largely for a 26-point loss at North Dakota State, a program in its first FBS season that is far stronger than an ordinary FCS opponent. Margin-only learning on one and two games is punishing both teams for playing up, and the residual -6.6 is not something I would defend against a market that has held -2.5 for a week.

Ohio is 0-1 with its defense torched for 49 points by Nebraska, starting QB Nick Poulos completed under 50% of his throws (14/31, 164 yds) in that loss, and WR R. Perry (Ohio's only reported injury, Covers 9/5-9/10) is questionable and considered unlikely to play, thinning an already shaky passing attack. Jacksonville State's ugly 33-7 loss came at North Dakota State in NDSU's debut as a new FBS program, not a true cupcake, and JSU bounced back to hang 49 on Eastern Kentucky with QB Caden Creel throwing multiple touchdowns. With a 90% rain/thunderstorm forecast likely to flatten both offenses and add turnover variance, I'd rather take the extra 2.5 points with a team that has already scored against real competition than lay them with a defense that just gave up 49.
