Arizona at BYU. Our picks: Arizona +7.5 (high). Under 47.5 (low).
The picks come first on this page. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit under them as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. Tiers are how decisively the evidence agreed, never a win probability.
Panel reasoning
Arizona at BYU, BYU -7.5. A Pima County judge's temporary restraining order restored RB Ismail Mahdi (859 rushing yards last year), LB Max Harris (78 tackles) and P Sullivan Moon, all of whom sat out the opener and are eligible here; Noah Fifita is coming off a 262-yard, 91.0 QBR debut. BYU is without S Raider Damuni for multiple weeks, RB Sione Moa is day to day, and Kelly Poppinga is calling the defense after Jay Hill left, though LB Isaiah Glasker returns. FanDuel opened +9.5 and has been bought down to +7.5 while Pinnacle sat at -7.5 all week and 85 percent of tickets are on BYU. Our number (BYU -6.1) is inside its floor. The case is the hook on 7 with Arizona's best back and a starting linebacker restored. The counter-case is a Provo home field our flat 2.5 underprices and BYU's 78 percent returning production. Take Arizona +7.5, available everywhere.
Under 47.5. Every book cut this three to six points (BetMGM 51.5, FanDuel 53.5, Pinnacle 50.5, all to 47.5) and the over is still the expensive side, which says fair value sits lower still. BYU gets its linebackers back, Arizona's questionable backs may sit, and the wind runs 7 to 15 mph. Our totals model sits on the market. One panel took the over on Fifita and Mahdi against a secondary missing Damuni. Under 47.5 (48 at Bovada).
Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the picks above are the call. Nothing in this block is a pick.
Context, not a call. The spread number is our rating difference plus home field. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
Over and under splits
Descriptive context on this game, every line with the games it counts. None of it is a reason a pick wins and none of it enters a tier.
- Early-season total of 48.5 fits the validated under window, unders 55% historically (n=943)H64 (validated): Aug through mid-Sep games with a closing total of 47+ landed under 55% of 943 games, 2015-2025. Recent seasons: 2022: 58% (n=92) · 2023: 53% (n=81) · 2024: 57% (n=103) · 2025: 52% (n=119). 2025 ran soft at 52.1%, below the -110 breakeven, and the 2026 forward test is pre-committed on the early-totals page. Early-season totals are shaded up by public over-action; the market corrects as real form data arrives.
The panel
Arizona +7.5
Over 47.5
Arizona +7.5 offers the valuable touchdown hook against an EL number of BYU -6.1, although that 1.4-point difference is not a demonstrated edge. The stronger argument is matchup-specific: Fifita remains Arizona’s starter, while BYU loses safety Raider Damuni. Arizona’s current depth chart lists its established offensive starters; the two questionable Arizona players in the dossier are not listed in its offensive rotation, so treating those flags as major offensive losses would be excessive. BYU deserves favoritism, and expected linebacker returns partially offset its secondary loss. Its home advantage could also exceed EL’s flat allowance. Market history is mixed: DraftKings moved toward BYU, while FanDuel moved toward Arizona, making a unified sharp-money narrative unjustified. Monday’s injury news is likely substantially priced by Wednesday. I prefer the experienced visiting quarterback plus more than a touchdown, but neither the news nor the unproven model supports a strong position.
Total. The under deserves respect: both defenses have strong prior-season results, BYU expects linebacker reinforcements, and the captured market has already fallen three to six points at several books. Possible running-back absences and the dossier’s wind forecast also favor fewer points. However, 47.5 now demands a relatively restrained game from two established quarterbacks. Damuni’s absence creates a plausible passing vulnerability, while Arizona’s depth chart does not establish major losses among its primary offensive options. EL’s 48.19 offers almost no independent support, but its 51.458 ridge baseline shows how heavily subsequent adjustments suppress scoring. I could not corroborate the 14.8-mph kickoff wind, so I would not mechanically accept that deduction. Take a modest over position at the reduced number; the decline alone does not prove an overreaction.
Where our model looks wrong
The spread model misses Damuni’s absence and BYU’s coordinator transition, but also misses returning linebackers and potentially understates Provo home advantage. Its precise -6.1 is unjustified after FCS openers. The totals documentation contradicts itself: it says weather is excluded, yet explicitly subtracts 2.911 points for wind. That unverified wind input materially drives the forecast. BYU’s official game-week page also lists No. 14, versus No. 15 in the dossier.
Arizona +7.5
Under 47.5
Our rating makes this BYU -6.1 into a market that opened -7.5 and still sits -7.5 at seven books, priced about -110 both ways with no movement all week (Sportsbook Review, 9/9). A 1.4-point gap is inside our model's noise, so the case has to come from news, and this week's news runs Arizona's way. A Pima County judge granted a TRO on 9/9 restoring RB Ismail Mahdi (859 rushing yards, 4 rushing TDs, 17 catches), LB Max Harris (78 tackles, third on the team) and P Sullivan Moon; all three sat out week 1 and all are eligible Saturday (SI, 9/9). Arizona has not confirmed it will activate them, but the line had not moved as of my last odds read. BYU meanwhile loses starting safety Raider Damuni for weeks with Tommy Prassas starting, and RB2 Sione Moa is day-to-day (Deseret 9/7, BYU depth chart via Yahoo 9/9), and is breaking in DC Kelly Poppinga after Jay Hill left for Michigan. These two needed double overtime last year, BYU 33-27. +7.5 buys the hook past the key number with a fifth-year QB in Noah Fifita. A lean, not a full-size bet.
Total. The move is the story. Opens were BetMGM 51.5, Pinnacle and Bovada 50.5, FanDuel 53.5 between 9/2 and 9/6; it is 47.5 at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Pinnacle now, and the over is still the expensive side (DK 47.5, over -115 / under -105, ESPN 9/9). A 3 to 6 point unanimous drop plus pricing that says fair is still below 47.5 is the strongest signal on this game, and it has a football reason: both defenses allowed 7 points in week 1, both allowed about 19 per game in 2025, and BYU's veteran line is built to shorten games. Against it: weather is benign, so there is no wind suppression, and both teams averaged 31-plus points in 2025. I side with the move while admitting I am buying at the bottom of it, hence the modest number.
Where our model looks wrong
Two places. First, the spread model is still essentially a preseason prior with one FCS blowout folded in: BYU 63-7 over Utah Tech and Arizona 35-7 over Northern Arizona tell it nothing, and it reads no roster news at all, so its -6.1 is not independent support for Arizona. I am taking the dog on this week's news, not on the 1.4-point gap, which the documented 46-50% held-out ATS record says is worthless on its own. Second, the totals model's wind layer subtracts 2.911 points off a captured 14.8 mph reading, but the NWS forecast for Provo on Saturday (api.weather.gov, retrieved 9/9) is SSE 7 to 15 mph, so that penalty is likely roughly double what it should be and the 48.19 is understated, which argues against the total side I took. Flat 2.5 home field also looks light for LaVell Edwards Stadium at roughly 4,500 feet in September heat.
Arizona +7.5
Under 47.5
Our model reads BYU -6.1 against the market's -7.5, a 1.4-point gap the model itself flags as a pass below its 6.5-point lean floor - treat that as noise, not a signal, especially since the model has no proven ATS edge in any gap bucket historically. Line history adds something real: FanDuel opened Arizona at +9.5 on 9/3 and has been bought down to +7.5 by 9/9, while Pinnacle - the sharpest of the five tracked books - opened and has sat at -7.5 all week without moving, suggesting an efficient number rather than a mispriced one. Neither side carries a confirmed impact injury: Arizona's Fifita (262 yds, 2 TD, 91.0 QBR Wk1) and BYU's Bachmeier (16/20, 198 yds, 3 TD Wk1) are both healthy and playing well; the questionable/out tags on both rosters are depth pieces, unconfirmed beyond our own Covers scan (ESPN/Rotowire shows no data for either team). Both Wk1 wins came against outmatched FCS/G5 opponents and tell us little about a true road Big 12 environment. I lean the points with Arizona, but lightly - the market found this number early and hasn't moved off it since.
Total. Every tracked book has cut this total hard: BetMGM 51.5->47.5, FanDuel 53.5->47.5, Pinnacle 50.5->47.5, Bovada 50.5->48, all converging inside half a point of each other by 2026-09-09 - a stronger signal than our own model, whose 48.19 sits only 0.6-0.7 above market and is far short of its own 12.86-point conviction threshold. That kind of uniform, multi-book decline usually means the market overpriced Week 1's 63-7 and 35-7 scorelines (both against clearly overmatched non-conference opponents) and has since corrected toward a more realistic Big 12 road-game number. Weather does not push this under: the NWS forecast for Provo on Saturday calls for a 93F high, dry and mostly sunny by kickoff, warmer and calmer than the dossier's captured 82F/14.8mph snapshot, so I am not leaning on weather here - I'm on the under mainly because the market itself already did the work.
Where our model looks wrong
The model's own gap (1.4 points) is below its 6.5-point lean floor, so it explicitly declines to lean here - but a flat 2.5-point home-field for every stadium likely undersells LaVell Edwards Stadium's environment and BYU's 78.5% returning production / stronger prior SP+ (15.9 vs 12.0), while injuries, depth and true availability (Damuni out, four questionable tags across both rosters) are completely invisible to the rating. The model's own held-out testing also shows zero proven ATS edge at any gap size, so its 'pass' here should not be read as evidence against betting this game either way - it is simply outside the model's demonstrated competence.

Confidence: high
Three independent analyst panels (A, B and C) worked the same evidence pack and the week's news independently, each returned a side, and each then ranked its five strongest picks for the week. Every panel was on this side and it ranked among the week's strongest picks on their lists. High is a decisiveness label for how firmly the panel agreed, never a win probability: high means every panel was on this side and ranked it among the week's best; only high picks count on the record and go free.
The total: Under 47.5 (low)

Home perspective: negative = home favored. Ours: BYU -6.1; market at synthesis: -7.5. Held-out 2024-2025 reconstructions (9,927 FBS games): 46-50% against the spread in every gap bucket, calibrated margin error 12.7 points. No against-the-spread edge at any gap size. Conditions at kickoff
Partially cloudy. 84F · wind 7 mph · 2% chance of precipitation
Provenance: schedule and finals from the Edge Labs database (2026 season); the line is the latest capture for this game with the book named; our number is the EL rating read (in-season once a team has played, preseason before that) plus 2.5 home field, none at neutral sites, and it is context on this page rather than the call. Signals come from the trend engine, each with its real sample; a tier is how decisively the evidence agreed and is never a win probability. Once the game kicks off this page stops computing and reads our pick lock ledger instead: the pick and the spread we were locked at, written once at kickoff, never updated, graded against that same number. Line movement comes from our permanent capture log, one book across both ends and never a capture taken at or after kickoff, so the second number is the last pregame line and after kickoff it is the close; a game the log has captured only once shows no movement rather than an invented one. Weather is the captured forecast for the venue, and the chip appears only when it is worth saying (wind at 12 mph or more, a 50 percent or better chance of rain, or 35F or colder), never on an indoor venue. Injury counts are our latest daily scan, real report rows only, and a team the scan does not cover is left out rather than shown as zero. The write-up is assembled from those same stored rows, never written around them: the case comes from the lock row, the signals from the trend engine with their own samples, the series from our game database from 2013 forward, and the scoring profiles from completed games only, each with the number of games it averages. A section with no data behind it is left out instead of filled in, it refreshes while the game is pregame, and it can never be edited once the game has kicked off. Trends are descriptive only, computed by the same shared module the write-up uses so the two cannot disagree: straight-up splits come from completed games in our database, situational splits look back three seasons and need at least eight decided games, records against the number and on the total arrive with the closing-line restore, and every line carries the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of them enter the confidence read. The totals block is a read and not a pick: our number is EL CFB Totals v1 (edgelabs.el_cfb_totals, season 2026, model_version v1, docs/el-cfb-totals-v1.md), a registered candidate that loses to the closing total, so it never posts to the board or the record; the market total beside it is the same capture the spread comes from before kickoff and the frozen consensus the model priced against after it, and the gap is measured against whichever number is printed. The totals trends under it are the trend engine's own rows for this game, deduped on the headline, each carrying its sample. On the games the analyst panel works each week (the games our model prices off the market plus the ranked and Power Four games, at most twenty), the pick and the total call are the panel's synthesis: three independent analyst panels, the same evidence pack, their own research, one side each, tiered by how firmly they agreed, never a win probability. A panel majority on a side is what makes a pick; without one the game is a published no-pick, printed as No pick rather than left blank. Research and context, never a guarantee, 21+.
